What to Unpack First When Moving Into a New Home

1. START WITH YOUR ESSENTIALS BOX

Before diving into the rest of your home, begin with your essentials box—the items you’ll need within the first 24 hours.

This should include:

  • Toiletries (toothbrush, soap, etc.)

  • Phone chargers

  • Medications

  • Basic cleaning supplies

  • A change of clothes

  • Important documents

Why this matters:You don’t want to be digging through boxes at night trying to find something simple like a toothbrush or charger.

2. UNPACK THE KITCHEN FIRST

The kitchen is one of the most important spaces to get functional quickly.

Focus on:

  • Plates, cups, and utensils

  • Coffee maker or kettle

  • Basic cookware

  • Paper towels and trash bags

You don’t need to unpack everything—just enough to make the space usable.

Why this matters:Having a working kitchen instantly makes your home feel more settled and reduces the need to rely on takeout.

3. SET UP YOUR BEDROOM

After a long moving day, nothing matters more than having a place to rest.

Start with:

  • Bed frame (if needed)

  • Mattress and bedding

  • Pillows and blankets

If possible, make your bed early in the day so it’s ready when you need it.

Why this matters:A comfortable place to sleep makes a huge difference in how you feel your first night.

4. GET THE BATHROOM READY

Next, focus on making at least one bathroom fully functional.

Unpack:

  • Towels

  • Shower curtain

  • Toiletries

  • Toilet paper

  • Basic cleaning items

Why this matters:Having a clean, ready-to-use bathroom helps you reset after a long day and feel more at home.

5. CLEAR WALKWAYS & LIVING SPACES

Before unpacking everything else, take time to clear out clutter from main living areas.

Prioritize:

  • Entryways

  • Hallways

  • Living room floor space

Break down boxes as you go to reduce buildup.

Why this matters:A clear space reduces stress and makes your home feel more open and manageable.

6. ORGANIZE CLOTHING (DON’T JUST UNPACK IT)

Instead of leaving clothes in boxes or piles, take a little extra time to put them away properly.

Focus on:

  • Hanging everyday items

  • Folding essentials

  • Setting up dresser space

Why this matters:This prevents your bedroom from becoming chaotic and helps you maintain order from the start.

7. PRIORITIZE DAILY-USE ITEMS

After the essentials are done, focus on items you use every day.

Examples:

  • Work supplies

  • Kids’ items

  • Pet supplies

  • Laundry basics

Why this matters:These are the items that keep your daily routine running smoothly.

WHAT NOT TO UNPACK RIGHT AWAY

Not everything needs to be done immediately.

You can wait on:

  • Decor and wall art

  • Seasonal items

  • Books and extras

  • Storage areas

Why this matters:Trying to do everything at once leads to burnout. Focus on function first, then details later.
